The Baron De Ley wines are all produced at a restored Monastery that dates back to 1548. Benedictine monks made wine production a major part of the estate's history, but the mid 90’s restoration of the Monastery and vineyards has led to a delicious 2014 vintage. Spain is known for its value, but this is ridiculous. Rioja is one of the most famous regions in the world, and it was the first region to reach Spain’s highest quality designation of Denominación de Origen Calificada. At this price point, you may be tempted to assume that this is a massive production wine without regional character…but we wouldn’t do that to you! This is a wine with less than 5,000 case production from the grape that most represents Rioja, Tempranillo. Not just the quintessential grape of the area, but from the single vineyard of Carboneras situated at 840 meters above sea level. True mountain Tempranillo. All of the juice is aged for 12 months in American oak barrels to really add concentrated dark fruit tones and bring out the herb and spice notes that Rioja is famous for!
The dark red to purple color sets you up for the coming intensity of the aromatics. When it hits your nose the dark berry, meaty notes combine with vanilla, spice, and sage. The acidity is well balanced, ready to cut through rich meats or earthy mushrooms. This will pair with just about anything that you want to throw on the grill. I dare you to try to keep from sipping it while you cook! The back and forth from dark fruit to dried herbs, back to spice and floral notes will provide an evening of enjoyment if you take your time. But at this price, you could just throw it back guilt-free, your call. I like it with New York strip!
“Forest floor and smoke notes frame black cherry and licorice flavors in this firm, smooth red. The polished texture and balanced structure support the fresh, harmonious character. Drink now through 2022.”
